Invisalign aligners have become the modern alternative to metal braces when it comes to giving teens and adults teeth that are straight and attractive. Since it was approved for use in the 1990s, more than 10 million Americans have turned to the Invisalign method. According to one survey, 47 percent of the teens undergoing Invisalign treatment reported a boost in their self-esteem, compared to only 22 percent of the teens fitted with conventional braces.
The Advantages of Invisalign Aligners
The aligners work in the same manner as metal braces. Both methods straighten teeth by applying gentle pressure over a period of time. The real difference is how they look and feel. Instead of metal, the aligners are made of plastic and, as implied by the name, they are virtually impossible to see from the outside. This alone can be of great benefit to anyone, especially a sensitive teen, who needs orthodontic care but would rather not be seen wearing braces or an adult who may feel “too old” for braces. There are other advantages as well, most notably that the aligners can be removed, making it easier to brush and floss the teeth. It also makes it possible for those undergoing the treatment to freely eat things that could create a problem for metal braces.
The Basics of Invisalign Treatment
The process will begin when the orthodontist takes a three-dimensional representation of the person’s teeth. Molds taken from this image will be used to create a series of aligners, or trays, which the patient will wear in succession. Each tray will be worn for a period of one or two weeks before it is replaced with the next one, with the process eventually straightening the person’s teeth. The aligners are normally worn for at least 20 hours a day. This method contrasts with metal braces, which must be worn constantly. The Invisalign treatment method can normally be completed in about a year, but this will depend upon the needs of the patient. However, the time needed to complete the straightening process is normally about six months less than with patients using conventional braces.
Considering the Invisalign Alternative
Invisalign aligners have been proven in the treatment of excessive spacing in the teeth and related problems, including overbites and underbites. When the costs involved and other issues are considered, Invisalign aligners may prove to be a wise choice for teens or adults requiring orthodontic treatment.
