What Should I Do If My Braces Or Appliance Breaks?

During treatment, it’s possible for parts of your braces or appliances to become loose, bent, or damaged. Common issues include:

  • Loose brackets or bands
  • Broken or poking wires
  • Irritating ties or elastics

These situations are usually not urgent, but they should be addressed to keep your treatment on track.

How Can I Manage Minor Discomfort At Home?

While waiting for your appointment, you can take simple steps to stay comfortable:

  • Cover any irritating wire with orthodontic wax
  • Use a pencil eraser or Q-tip to gently tuck a wire into place
  • Leave loose brackets or bands in place until repaired
  • Carefully trim a protruding wire with clean nail clippers if needed

If discomfort persists, over-the-counter pain relief may help until we can see you.

What Should I Do If I Injure My Teeth Or Mouth?

If you experience a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, take immediate action:

  • Apply ice to reduce swelling
  • Contact your general dentist as soon as possible

Your dentist is best equipped to treat:

  • Knocked-out or displaced teeth
  • Fractured or chipped teeth
  • Injuries requiring X-rays or urgent care

After your dental care is complete, we will repair or adjust your orthodontic appliances if needed.

When Should I Contact The Orthodontist?

You should contact our office if:

  • A bracket, band, or wire becomes loose or broken
  • You are experiencing ongoing irritation or discomfort
  • Your appliance is no longer fitting or functioning properly

Prompt communication helps prevent delays in your treatment.

What Happens If I Have An Emergency After Hours?
