Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a type of orthodontic treatment used to correct severe cases like bad bites, jaw bone abnormalities, and malocclusion.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery focuses on treating complex craniofacial cases that involve the mouth, jaw, face, and skull.

Dr. Ross will work with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to ensure that if you need surgical orthodontics you receive the best care possible.

When would you need surgical orthodontics?

We use surgical orthodontics to treat adults with improper bites or other aesthetic concerns.

Surgical orthodontics is needed when the jaws don’t line up correctly, and normal orthodontics won’t be able to treat it.

Orthognathic surgery, can’t be done until your jaw is done growing. Typically, jaw growth stops by age 16 in females and 18 in males.

How do I know if I need orthognathic surgery?

Dr. Ross can tell you if orthognathic surgery is necessary. Depending on how bad your case and the alignment of your jaw, you may or may not need surgery.

How does corrective jaw (orthognathic) surgery work?

First, you’ll wear braces to get your teeth into the correct positions before surgery.
An oral and maxillofacial surgeon will perform the second phase, orthognathic surgery, in a hospital.

Orthognathic surgery can take several hours. Once the surgery is done, you’ll have a two-week rest period.

Since orthognathic surgery is a major treatment, schedule some time away from work and school while you heal. After your jaw heals, Dr. Ross will fine-tune your bite.

During the final stage, you’ll continue wearing braces. Most braces are removed within six to 12 months following surgery. After your braces are removed, you will wear a retainer to help maintain your new smile.

What are the risks with orthognathic surgery?

There are risks to having orthognathic surgery, just like any other major surgery. However, orthognathic surgery is fairly common and is completed successfully all of the time.

If you are concerned about the risks that come with surgical treatment, let us know. We’re happy to answer any questions you have and make sure you are comfortable with the treatment.

What are the benefits of having orthognathic surgery?
